Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to Norway?
Be sure to bring all of your documents upon arrival. You should also bring some warm clothes, as the temperatures in Norway are generally low. Check out the weather forecast at yr.no for the city you are going to. It can be a good idea to bring a pair of hiking shoes and a solid backpack if you are planning on participating in any of the weekends. Check with your Reception Officer before arrival what is already in your apartment. A lot of rooms don’t include a duvet and a pillow.

Where will I live?
In most cases, the lodging is arranged either by IAESTE or the employer. We try our best to find you a cheap and convenient place to stay. In the larger cities, we have arrangements so that you can live together with other trainees or students in dorms or apartments. The prices vary from 3000-6000 NOK/month, depending on which city you are in.

What if I end up in a city far from a Local committee? Will I be all alone?
All IAESTE trainees are linked to a Local Committee, even if that is far away. The Reception Officer there will help you throughout your stay, and inform you about weekends and other social events. We find it important to include all our trainees in the reception program. Trainees who live far away can apply for travel funding. Ask your Reception Officer about this.

I’ve heard Norway is very expensive… how much money should I bring?
If you are unlucky, you may not get paid until a month after your arrival. Be therefore sure to bring enough money for this time. The estimated living cost in Norway (lodging not included) is approximately 5 000 NOK/ month. Some landlords require you to pay a deposit upon arrival. This can be up to 10 000 NOK.

I was told I had to arrive a couple of days before my work starts. Why?
The first couple of days in Norway, the reception officer will help you with some practical matters. If you are a non EU/EEA student, you have to go to the police station within 7 days after your arrival, to obtain your work permit. We also help you with getting a tax card, a Norwegian sim-card and open a Norwegian bank account. We recommend that you arrive in Norway at least 2-3 working days before you start working.
